Investigating interfaces: an experimental approach to focus in Sicilian Italian

چکیده
This paper describes an investigation of the syntax-prosody interface in the expression of focus in Sicilian Italian. It finds evidence of a generalised reversal of the articulation of information structure, with new information often preceding old, and of intonational differentiation between focus types. Introduction A pressing question in current linguistic theory is how different components of language interact. Our investigation considers the prosody and syntax interaction in the expression of focus. A major challenge for interface studies is reconciling differences in methodology and theoretical approach inherent in each discipline. This is particularly true for an investigation of focus, a phenomenon particularly difficult to elicit under experimental controls. Our study examines focus in two varieties of Sicilian Italian. This variety is of particular interest because, although the ‘default’ word order (i.e. for ‘broad focus’) is VO, as in other varieties of Italian, a very frequent OV order is attested with the expression of New Information Focus (see Poletto and Benincà, 2002 and Cruschina, 2006). This again contrasts with Italian where the typical partition of a sentence sees the old information preceding the new information (see example 1), while the preverbal position is typically available only for Contrastive Focus (see example 2): (1) A. Cosa mangia Gianni? ‘What does John eat?’ B. Gianni mangia una mela ‘John eats an apple’ (2) A Gianni mangia una pera? John eats a pear? No, una mela mangia No, an apple he eats It has been argued that in Sicilian Italian a preverbal position can be targeted not only by contrastively focused material, but also by new information focus. The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates
This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...
متن کاملPérez-Cabello de Alba: An Account of Selectional Restrictions within a Conceptual Framework: Its Relevance for Role and Reference Grammar
This paper deals with a focusing strategy, focus fronting, whereby the focused information unit precedes the finite nucleus. Our principal concern is with the micro-parametric variation between Nuorese Sardinian, Sicilian, and Italian, three Romance languages which display focus fronting to different extents and in different modalities. We claim that whereas focus fronting in Sardinian occurs i...
متن کاملAnti-Listeria Activity of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Two Traditional Sicilian Cheeses
Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen frequently found in dairy products, and its growth is difficult to control. Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS), produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), having proven in vitro anti-Listeria activity, could provide an innovative approach to control L. monocytogenes; however, this application needs to be evaluated in vivo. In this study, twenty LAB s...
متن کاملRegional Incentives and Patient Cross-Border Mobility: Evidence from the Italian Experience
Background In recent years, accreditation of private hospitals followed by decentralisation of the Italian National Health Service (NHS) into 21 regional health systems has provided a good empirical ground for investigating the Tiebout principle of “voting with their feet”. We examine the infra-regional trade-off between greater patient choice (due to an increase in hospital services supply) an...
متن کاملGenetic diversity and admixture analysis of Sanfratellano and three other Italian horse breeds assessed by microsatellite markers.
Sanfratellano is a native Sicilian horse breed, mainly reared in the north east of the Island, developed in the 19th century from local dams and sires with a restricted introgression of Oriental, African and, more recently, Maremmano stallions. In this study, the genetic relationships and admixture among Sanfratellano, the other two Sicilian autochthonous breeds and Maremmano breed were assesse...
